Kamal Nath directs state Government to prepare DPR for Metro in Nagpur
HOPES for metro rail in growing metro like Nagpur got a boost with Union Urban Development Minister Kamal Nath announcing Metro for all Major cities with 20lakh plus population. Earlier announcement of Metro in Nagpur had remained only on paper, but with UPA Government announcing a major policy decision on Thursday, it may turns out to be reality.
Various modes of public transport like sky-bus, ring railway, metro, BRTS were mooted for Nagpur, very little happened on ground. With city skyline stretching up-to industrial hub at Butibori, growth of Metro region & growth centres beyond the municipals limits has underlined need for efficient public transport system to meet future demand.
Kamal Nath said, the UDD is in touch with the Maharashtra government for getting a Detailed Project Report (DPR) for metro in Nagpur. The DPRs are prepared by Delhi Metro Rail Corporation & submitted to the other states. The Minister promised that centre will bear 50% cost of the DPR for emerging cities like Nagpur.
According to a study conducted by Assocham, Nagpur is likely to have 50lakh population by 2030 & will required new age transport system of Metro which had eased congestion in Delhi, Bangalore & is being constructed in cities like Mumbai, Chennai & Hyderabad. While respective DPRs have been prepared for Pune, Ludhiana, Ahmadabad & Lucknow, the preparation of reports for Indore, Bhopal & Chandigarh in a process & Nagpur is in the pipe-line.
The most critical issue in times to come will be efficient transport system to decongest burgeoning urban vehicular traffic volume. Metro rail has the potential to bring all-rounded benefits to business, the environment & people from all walks of life. It is evolving as an industry on its own, & creating space for new services & jobs, a study conducted by Assocham said.
According to Assocham study, cities will account for 69 percent of the county’s GDP in the next two decades. Delhi Metro, since its inception, has helped reduction of over five lakh vehicles on city roads leading to fuel savings of Rs 8,000 crore in 2010-11.
These could rise progressively to Rs 20, 000 crore by 2020. Better connectivity of suburbs, development of areas beyond the urban limits, even spread of population, trade & industries often result in all round prosperity like one witnessed in National Capital Region (NCR) & this has actually encouraged Centre to go in for Metro Rail in Other Major cities.
