In THE wake of Maruti Suzuki India’s (MSI) hunt for strategic location for its new manufacturing unit, local Industrial s will be meeting chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan in Mumbai on September 15 and convince him to put in efforts to attract the country’s largest car-maker to Nagpur.
MSI is looking for a 1,000-acre land for its new plant with a project investment of Rs.2,000 crore.
However, there are report that Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi, too, is ready to roll out the red carpet for Maruti Suzuki in Gujarat. It is learnt that the Gujarat Government is ready to offer 650 acre of land readily available with it, and Maruti will have to scour for only the remaining piece of land. As per reports, Maruti might not face any difficulty in acquiring the land and this may tilt the Maruti balanced in favor of Gujarat.
Meanwhile, the delegation of Vidarbha Industries Association (VAI), scheduled to meet the Maharashtra Chief Minister, has enough points to impress upon at least Prithviraj chavan to urge him to lead the assault, “Maharashtra Government’s bid for the proposed plant gather signification on the fact that a big chuck of 4,000 acre has already been acquired in Butibori MIDC and we can easily allot 1,000 acre to Maruti," said Prafull Doshi, VIA president and a member of the delegation. Factors like availability of surplus power and Nagpur’s strategic location may also make the geography a better choice for Maruti which is facing the heat of workers agitation at its Manesar unit.
Road, rail and air connectivity to Butibori MIDC and available of skilled manpower further make Nagpur a perfect place for the unit.
Anticipating huge industrial development in the region if Nagpur gets Maruti’s unit here, the industrial of the region have appealed to the local politicians to join hands and lobby for bringing Maruti Suzuki here. Industry expects felt attracting a company of Maruti stature needs tremendous political backing.
“And when the stalwarts and heavyweight like BJP president Nitin Gadkari and four All India Congress Committee (AICC) Office-bearing Mukul Wasnik, Vilas Muttemwar, Anees Ahmed and Avinash pande are form the Nagpur, the task of influencing the center and state Government doesn’t appear very tough,” the experts said.
Interestingly, the Butibori MIDC Industrial Estate is located in the Lok sabha constituency of Mukul Wasnik, Know for his closeness to the central leadership. The VIA delegation comprises Prafull Doshi, Pravin Tapadia, Rohit Bajaj, Suresh Agrawal and Secretary Akash Agrawal.
